For Spring-Summer 18, Christopher Kane explored the theme of domesticity. Needless to say, these housewives had a slight twist to them. Although you couldn't imagine these women doing any type of household chores, it nevertheless made for some very powerful fashion.
Reappropriation is one of Kane's key strengths as a designer. We're talking about a man who once put bejewelled crocs on the runway. The designer's tongue-in-cheek sense of humour was well and truly present here, as he used drying clips to close garments and precious little raffia bin bags to “protect” his actual handbags.
Paradoxically, satire was also the starting point for some truly exquisite eveningwear. Granted you are the kind of woman that doesn't want another run-of-the-mill cocktail dress. Silk numbers were cut into fringe made to mimic a mop. The sensuality and graphic appeal of these pieces are sure to put Kane on many a red carpet this year.
The theme of domestic life took on a fetishistic dimension, as the designer alternated between round-shouldered coats, multi-coloured asymmetrical ruffle dresses, floral sequins on sheer textile, vinyl against pretty cotton, and copious amounts of lace. If this sounds like a lot, it is because Kane's work as of late has gone the way of the baroque. Although excess, in this case, rhymes with success.
Every season, Christopher Kane takes us on a journey to find beauty in unexpected places and SS18 was no exception. This collection stroke the perfect balance between creativity and sophistication. And, after all, finding new things for us to lust over, isn't that what we call fashion?
